Disney Social Club Explains: Historical Release Dates and Information from Past D23 Expo and Destination D Events

We recently started receiving a lot of questions about when tickets for this year’s Destination D would go on sale and when the date for the 2019 D23 Expo would be announced. While we don’t have answers to either of those questions, we did want to share some fun information with you that may give you an idea as to how D23 announces these events and their ticket and schedule releases.
Below you will find the event dates and location for all of the D23 Expos held in the U.S. and Japan as well as information on previous Destination D events. We also provided information like when tickets went on sale and when the full schedule was released if we could find confirmed information on those details from quality sources/sites.

D23 Expo – United States
All US D23 Expo’s have been held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California

September 10–13, 2009

  •  “On March 10, 2009, Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger introduced D23: The Official Disney Fan Club and the then-upcoming D23 Expo 2009 in grand style on ABC’s hit daytime talk show The View.”
  •  That year’s annual meeting of shareholders was March 10, 2009.
  • The full schedule was released on August 25, 2009

August 19–21, 2011

  • The 2011 Expo dates were announced on March 10, 2010.
  •  That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 8, 2010.
  • Tickets went on sale August 19, 2010.
  • For the 2011 Expo, pricing was announced on Aug 18, 2010 and tickets went on sale on August 19, 2010. That means pricing was announced 1 day before tickets went on sale.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on August 12, 2011.
  • On August 19, 2011 Saturday only tickets sold out

August 9-11, 2013

  • The 2013 Expo dates were announced on Mar 9, 2012.
  • That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 13, 2012.
  • Tickets went on sale August 9, 2012.
  • For the 2013 Expo, pricing was announced on July 26, 2012 and tickets went on sale on August 9, 2012. That means pricing was announced 14 days before tickets went on sale.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on July 30, 2013.
  • On August 8, 2013 Saturday only tickets sold out.

August 14–16, 2015

  • The 2015 Expo dates were announced on March 18 2014 at The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting.
  • Tickets went on sale August 14, 2014.
  • For the 2015 Expo, pricing was announced on August 6, 2014 and tickets went on sale on August 14, 2014. That means pricing was announced 8 days before tickets went on sale.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on July 21, 2015.
  • 2015 D23 Expo tickets started mailing in mid-July 2015. Tickets are mailed in waves.
  • 3-day sold out prior to August 11, 2015. (Exact announcement date could not be found references to being sold out were)
  • Saturday only tickets sold out prior to August 8, 2015 (Exact announcement date could not be found references to being sold out were)

July 14-16, 2017

  • The 2017 Expo dates were announced on March 28, 2016.
  • That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 3, 2016
  • Tickets went on sale July 14, 2016.
  • For the 2017 Expo, pricing was announced on July 6, 2016 and tickets went on sale July 14, 2016. That means pricing was announced 8 days before tickets went on sale.
  • 2017 D23 Expo tickets started mailing in mid-June 2017. Tickets are mailed in waves.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on July 11, 2017.
  • On May 5, 2017 Saturday only tickets sold out.
  • On July 5, 2017 3-day tickets sold out.
  • On July 14, 2017 Friday only tickets sold out.

 2019 D23 Expo – August 23–25, 2019

  • The 2019 Expo dates were announced on March 26, 2018.
  • That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 8, 2018.
  • Tickets will go on sale on August 23, 2018.
  • For the 2019 Expo, pricing was announced on August 17, 2018 and tickets went on sale August 23, 2018. That means pricing was announced six days before tickets went on sale.

      • 3 Day Ticket early bird $177, after November 20 $219
      • 1 Day Ticket early bird $67, after November 20 $79

      Non D23 Gold Member Pricing

      • 3 Day Ticket $249
      • 1 Day Ticket $89
  • On April 29, 2019 3-day tickets sold out.

Destination D Event Information
Destination D events have gone from being a yearly event with a “floating” location to an every other year event that is held on even numbered years at Walt Disney World.

September 24-25, 2010

  • Was held at the Disneyland Hotel ballroom in Anaheim, California.
  • 2010 Destination D dates were announced on March 10, 2010.
  • The theme was Disneyland ’55.

May 14-15, 2011

  • Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
  •  2011 Destination D dates were announced February 11, 2011.
  • Tickets went on sale February 24, 2011.
  • The theme was Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th

August 11-12, 2012

  • Was held at the Disneyland Hotel ballroom in Anaheim, California.
  •  2012 Destination D dates were announced November 28, 2011.
  • Tickets went on sale April 18, 2012
  • The full schedule was released on June 5, 2012.
  • The theme was 75 Years of Disney Animated Features

November 22 – 23, 2014

  • Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
  • 2014 Destination D dates were announced January 21, 2014.
  • Tickets went on sale April 16, 2014.
  • The full schedule was announced on or around September 17, 2014.
  • The theme was Destination D: Attraction Rewind.

November 19- 20, 2016

  • Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
  • 2016 Destination D dates were announced December 1, 2015.
  • Tickets went on sale April 21, 2016.
  • The full schedule was announced on Oct 19, 2016.
  • The theme was Destination D: Amazing Adventures.

November 16-18, 2018

  • Will be held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
  • 2018 Destination D dates were announced October 1, 2017.
  • Tickets went on sale on April 12th, 2018.
    Gold and Gold family members tickets were priced at $215 per person. These tickets officially sold out on May 23, 2018.
  • The full schedule has not yet been announced.
  • The theme will be Destination D: Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse.

D23 Expo Japan Dates
All D23 Expo Japan Expos have been held at the Tokyo Disney Resort.

October 12–14, 2013

  • The 2013 Japan Expo dates were announced on February 25, 2013.
  • Tickets application started on or around March 28, 2013.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on March 28, 2013.

November 6–8, 2015

  •  The 2015 Japan Expo dates were announced on March 16, 2015.
  • Tickets application started on or around May 6, 2015.
  • The full Expo schedule was released on May 7, 2015.

February 10–12, 2018

  • The 2017 Japan Expo dates were announced on March 21, 2017.
  • 3 day Fantasia Pass E-ticket advance lottery ticket sales started on August 23, 2017
  • The full Expo schedule was released on July 19, 2017.

*The D23 Japan Expo uses a lottery and application system for tickets, events and merchandise.
